Year 2 is all about having a go, practising and learning through our mistakes. We will be working on the qualities of resilience and perseverance to develop a 'I can't do it...yet' approach to learning where everyone can achieve success.
As the children get older and mature, we will be expecting them to become more independent in their learning and take more responsible for organising their belongings. For example, asking a peer before putting their hand up for adult support, changing their own reading books.
Over the year, we focus on three exciting topics: Dead Famous (Autumn term), Africa (Spring term) and Fire, Fire (Summer term). All subjects are taught through this theme / cross-curricular to immerse and engage the children in their learning. See Curriculum maps below. We welcome children bringing in anything from home that would enrich our topic. There are a number of enrichment days across the year that cover a wide variety of subjects (e.g. Roald Dahl day, African café day, Great Fire of London workshop) and details will be sent out nearer these dates.
Literacy and Maths activities will be sent home in a plastic wallet on Fridays. This home learning will consolidate what the children have been learning in class during the week. Please return the wallet on Thursdays so new activities can be distributed. Regular reading and mental maths practise will also support your child's progress.
Children in Year 2 a required to sit statutory assessments in May. These are used to inform teacher assessment for progress at the end of Key Stage 1. We will hold a SATs workshop to give further information during the coming year.
Finally, if you would like to offer to help / support in the classroom (e.g. hearing readers, supporting in Numeracy, practical activities such as gardening or sewing) please talk to your child's class teacher. We are always extremely grateful for any offers.
