Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School

Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

Year 6 is an important year of challenges, surprises, growing up and preparing for the inevitable move to secondary school. The children have the opportunity to undertake vital roles throughout the school, giving them a status coupled with responsibility. As the oldest children at OLI, we look to these pupils to set an excellent example for the rest of the school by providing positive role models of behaviour and learning. The pupils continue to be ‘buddies’ for year 1, helping them to settle and develop their social skills.

In common with all the other year groups, we aim to provide a broad, balanced curriculum and to prepare the children for their future education. We encourage children to reflect, in greater depth, on themselves as learners and as considerate members of society. As secondary school is fast approaching, we encourage the children to be self-reliant and self-sufficient, taking full responsibility for organising themselves and being punctual with homework.

Integral to our teaching is the development of pupils’ self-assessment and reflection so that they know how to move their learning forward. Year 6 children will sit the SATS tests in Maths, Reading, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation in May. Throughout the preparation for their forthcoming tests, we encourage the children to judge themselves against their own previous performance and to celebrate the progress that they have made, rather than comparing themselves with others.

The year certainly isn’t ‘all work and no play’ as the pupils go on a fun-packed residential trip to Windmill Hill where they develop crucial teamwork skills and confidence. Towards the end of the summer term, all pupils dedicate their time and efforts to rehearsing in order to make theiryear 6 production a huge success. To commemorate the pupils' time at OLI, a special (and emotional) Leavers’ Service is held which provides their parish family an opportunity to wish them well and say goodbye.

Above all, we aspire to provide a productive and enjoyable year for the children, enabling them to leave with a genuine sense of pride and achievement!
